Those gases from engines
Those smoke from factories
are causing our Mother Earth to be down with asthma!
Spare a knowledge,
Spare a thought
Air talk!
Shocking Facts!
1. 70,000 premature deaths in the U.S. each year are tied to air pollution.
2. The USA alone releases one quarter of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions. From 1990 to 2002, U.S. CO2 emissions increased 95 percent from 1960 levels.
3. According to the World Health Organization, if you are one of the 18 million residents of Cairo: Breathing daily air pollution is like smoking 20 cigarettes a day
4. The World Bank reported in 2002 that pollution causes 2.42 billion dollars worth of damage to the Egyptian environment annually
5. According to Carnegie Institution’s Department of Global Ecology, carbon dioxide (a greenhouse gas) is rising at an alarming rate. During the 1990s, carbon dioxide emissions increased approximately 1.3% each year. But since 2000, the rate has increased to 3.3% per year, with an estimated annual global CO2 emissions increase of 35% from 1990 to 2006.
See how a noble child wants to save the Earth's air!

4. Methane
- Caused by bacterial decay of vegetation and other sources
- Agriculture (Rice fields)
- Cows and other farm animals produce the gas as well.
- Used as the natural gas fuel and some of it leaks from pipelines
Small amounts of methane are harmless to people, but they help trap heat from the Sun in the 'greenhouse effect'.
Task 7: Greenhouse effect / Global Warming
Research on the causes and effects of global warming.
Then design a poster to be put up everywhere in Singapore to remind people to help in preventing the worsening of the global warming.
Your product should look better like this:
-
5. Unburnt Hydrocarbons
- Come from hydrocarbons in fuel that has not been burnt in vehicle engines
- Causes cancer.
- Reacts with sunlight and other pollutants to form ozone.
-
6. Ozone
- Surrounds th Earth at high altitudes and prevents harmful solar radiation to enter the Earth
- Absorbs ultraviolent rays from the Sun
- Reacts with other pollutants under sunlight to form photochemical smog
- Appears brownish haze over cities
Task 8: Case Study 2: Photochemical Smog & Ozone
Read the following article from the World Environment Promotional Board in year 4529:
"Since 1978, the amount of ozone in the ozone layer has decreased. This depletion is particularly great at the South Pole, where up to half the ozone over Antarctica has been destroyed since 1987. Today, almost every country is experiencing flooding caused by the melting of ice caps and the irregular weather patterns are due to the bad air pollution in the past 3000 years."
You died of severe lung cancer mainly in year 2008 and could travel to year 4529 to explain to the government in that year about the situation now and explain the situation then was already very difficult.
You are given a platform in front of the Earthlings at Refesnica, the leading nation in economy in year 4529. Your speech should include:
1. Your illness caused by photochemical smog
2. World's status then
3. Warn people of effects of photochemical smog
4. Ozone layer status then in 2009 (Requires research)
